THE Wentworth Youth Centre was filled with cheers of proud students and family members recently as it celebrated 120 students graduating from their accredited skills development programmes.

The graduates successfully completed a six-month training course on assistant chef training, assistant electrical work and sewing.  These courses, which were conducted by Thekwini TVET College and funded by the eThekwini South Youth in Business, are part of a broader initiative to develop and empower young people in the Durban South community.

The students were split into two intakes, 60 in the first quarter of the year and the remaining 60 students in the third quarter.

Celeste King, chairperson of eThekwini South Youth in Business, one of the drivers of the project, said it was an exciting and emotional moment for her to witness.

“They were so happy and had been waiting for this. The WhatsApp group chats were going wild, talking about their gowns, make-up and what they are going to do. It was that beautiful to see them feel accomplished,” said King.

Even with the celebratory atmosphere, King emphasised the emotional cost of the process, especially since they have students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“As an NPO we are much grateful and honoured that we can bring such change and improve and develop young people,” said King.

She told them that it’s not so much about learning skills, it’s about restoring hope. “I get emotional on days like these. It’s been my vision to change the lives of young people, especially those who had lost hope and were too afraid to step out of their comfort zones,” said King.

She added that the Wentworth Youth Centre lauded all the graduates.
