Derek cashes in at roadrunners pairs

TWENTY six teams competed in last Wednesday’s roadrunner’s open pairs at Wanderers Bowling Club.
Although there were some big scores achieved on the bowling green, the runaway main winner of the day had no part in any of the bowls prizes as such, but did have incredible luck with the various other prize-generating aids.
There were two full 60/40 boards filled and drawn, as well as the usual lotto which promised a substantial carryover, and lucky plucky Derek Stevens not only won the main prize on each of the money boards, but was one of the three winners of the lotto jackpot of R750, which, with his 1/3rd share together with the R80 from the board draws left him walking off with a massive R330 – an unheard of stash of cash for a normal monthly competition. Well done, Derek.
Last minute entrants Gary Moffat and Lilah Nel from the neighbouring Bluff club turned out to be runaway winners of the bowls tournament with the score of 10+34. But their meat prize, although chunky and surely most welcome, paled in comparison to what Derek walked away with. Second place went to Chris Pozyn and Joan Bruce with 10+20, and Lofty Cawthorne and Ron Jackson took third spot with 10+12. The first, second and third skins respectively went to Dennis Gericke and Eric Redman +8, Andy and Brenda Andraschko +10 and Chris Klopper and Len Roscoe +12. Colin Nicholas and Ricky Blann were “sportsmen” winners on 0-34. Runners up to Derek on the two board draws were Sonja Koch and Robbie Carr (R20 each). Jumbo Nel (Kentucky ham) and Margaret Eitner (wors and pork shanks) were the meat raffle winners, and the other two lotto winners, apart from Derek as already mentioned, were Ron Jackson and Ken Thomas (R250 each). They each chose 4-7-9 as the winning combination of numbers.
During the week, Steve Van Rooyen and Bob Hayward managed to win the perch at Stella Park’s three bowl pairs competition on Tuesday, giving them each a nice steak parcel as well as R400 to share. Then, over the weekend, Steve playing with Richard, Bob and Shaun won the Empangeni tournament for the second year running. Shaun replaced Wayne this year.
Some club competitions were played both during the week and on the weekend. In the men’s fours Lofty, Greg, Dave and Les came back from 13-3 down to win 24-16 against Robbie, Bill, Russell and Ken. Henry Hamilton continued on his winning way in the handicap singles beating Jeff Bolt 21-12; and Errol Pienaar scraped in against Derek Stevens at 21-20 in the same event. Arnie Harper beat Chris Klopper 21-10 in the men’s senior singles, and in the same event Henry Hamilton beat Colin Howes 21-8, and Mike Flack came surging back from a 5-16 deficit against Robbie Carr to win 21-18.
In Sunday’s monthly fours, skins, Ronnie Jackson, Dave White, Lionel de la Rey and Gladys Myburgh playing together for the first time, did everything right to win the overall first prize and claim the perch for September’s event with their score of 18+20. In second place on 16+12 were Clive Symons, Mike and Jackie Freeman and Jo-Anne Jordaan. Both the first and second sessions were conceded by the foursome of Denis Hearnshaw, Phil Pieterse, Val McCaffrey and Chantal Hearnshaw which ensured them the sportsman’s prize on 0-40. Arnie Harper, Jimmy Neill, Mike Flack and Barbara Neill won the first on 10+24, and the second went to Eric and Anne Smit with Eric Kitchenbrand and Margaret “Honey” Eitner on 10+16. All the remaining teams were awarded John Dory meal discount vouchers.
The snowball last Friday was again not won when Craig Haughey was not present so it becomes R1,100 next week. Various raffle winners were (mutton pack and burger patties) Des Demmer; (chicken packs) Thomas Simpkins; (pork ribs) Eric and Anne Smit; (rump steak) Wayne Armstrong; (pork roast) Eric Redman.
In the rugby score prediction, R160 was won by Clive Symons.
Upcoming events: Next Wednesday is the Lyn Wild open pairs in mufti. Ron Jackson will receive entries on 031-464-7990.
Snippet: Last week’s snippet was a total disaster as it was taken from an outdated Law Book and was indeed outdated information. This scribe apologises for the mistake. This week’s snippet is a lot simpler and deserves repeating: Players should diligently attend to the duties of their allotted positions in a fours match, and not be concerned about how the other members of their team are performing. For instance, a lead or second should not attempt to direct the head behind the back of the third, even if that is their normal position and they consider themselves more “qualified” to do this or because they feel the current third is not doing the job correctly. It can be most unsettling for all the players when there is conflicting direction, which also causes the dreaded two-mindedness in the player, and skips should take steps to prevent this sort of thing happening. Similarly, leads and thirds should leave the writing up of the board and scoring thereon to the seconds, and all players should respond positively to the direction of the skip or third directing the head.
