Funnells finish first and third in PNB pairs

In a tight match, Russell and Derick pulled through to win narrowly by a few shots (believed to be about 22-20).

WITH the semis and finals of the PNB pairs having been played out on Sunday at Wanderers Bowling Club, the men’s section was won by young Russell Funnell playing with his dad, Derick.

They won their semi final match against Keith Orrell and John Horn by a fair margin to make it into the finals and come up against who many would have considered to be favourites to win, namely Stella Park’s Dion Audie and Wayne Rittmuller, who had comfortably beaten the ‘other’ Funnell pairing of brothers Graham and Craig in the second semi final.

In a tight match, Russell and Derick pulled through to win narrowly by a few shots, believed to be about 22-20. This left Graham and Craig Funnell to play off against Keith and John for third and fourth spot, which the Funnell brothers did in fact win. Jill Hackland and partner won the women’s section. Congratulations to all players for providing some excellent and entertaining bowls.

Last Wednesday attracted 24 teams to the Lyn Wild’s open pairs. Husband and wife Andy and Brenda Andraschko were overall winners on count out from Jumbo Nel and Keith Wild, both teams finishing with 4+23. First session went to father and son Raj and Russell Rangiah on 2+10, and Terry Brown and Derek Stevens pulled off the second session on 2+11.

Sportsman’s prize went to Johan Nel and Martin Gillespie on 0-21. Robbie Carr and Terry Brown were each successful with the meat raffle, while Maria Cavanagh and Eric Miller won the lion’s share of the two 60/40 boards. Errol Pienaar and Sonja Koch settled for the minor pickings. The lotto was not won, so it is a R120 carryover.

In club competitions, novice Tommy Simpkins beat Ken Koch 21-18 in the handicap singles and in the men’s nominated pairs Eric Kitchenbrand and another novice Shaun McAlister beat Errol Pienaar and Joe McNamara. It looks like we have a number of promising young novices coming good at the club. Johnny Goosen and Mike Freeman prevailed by two shots over Steve Van Rooyen and a very off-form Bob Hayward in the same event. In the drawn mixed pairs Bill Addinall and Barbara Neill won 23-17 over Ron Jackson and Gwen Tait.

Next Friday, members are encouraged to get to the club early to watch the two featured rugby matches. At 5pm, the Cheetahs play Western Province and at 7pm the Sharks take on the Lions away, which should be a humdinger based on how both these teams played last week. At 6pm, a live band, the duo “The Locals” (ex “Bent Penny”) will entertain members with music of their era until 10.30pm. Be early to secure your seat. Food will be on sale.

Last Friday, Dave Swanson’s number was drawn in the snowball but as he was not present, the R800 was not won and will escalate to R900 next week – all the more reason to be at the club on Friday. The various meat winners were: Lamb pack Mark Jackson; chicken packs Hennie Geldenhuys; rump steak Billy Lottering; pork ribs Carl van Rooyen; chicken Richard Hendicott.

The next event for Wanderers bowls will be the breakfast trips which has been shunted to Sunday, 29 September, just for this month. It is normally held on the second Sunday, but this month, that date clashed with the playing of the PNB pairs. Contact Jeff Bolt on 082-808-7793 to enter your team. The breakfast is as good as you’ll get anywhere.

Snippet: Top Coach’s tip: Delaying the forward step. If you are having trouble with your weight control, especially when continuously pulling up short, try delaying your forward step until the backswing has been fully completed. Then as you swing the bowling arm forward take the forward step simultaneously, leading with the head, body and shoulders, ensuring a full and exaggerated follow through. When you step forward at the same time as starting your backswing, there is a danger of swinging “off the line” either “inside-out” or “outside-in”. By delaying the step, this problem can be largely rectified, as everything goes forward together and in sync. Notice how many of the top players are now doing this. Try it for yourself and see the improvement.
