Monster ‘end of league’ party planned for Wanderers BC
Drawn prizes went the way of skips Arnie Harper and Bob Hayward seconds Rina Harper and Ron Jackson and leads Neville Horner and Cynthia Addinall.

NEXT weekend will feature a ‘back to back’ finale of the men’s interclub league at Wanderers Bowling Club.
Round eight will take place on Saturday afternoon, 5 October and round nine – the last round – on Sunday morning, 6 October.
The committee at Wanderers Bowling Club has gone to great lengths to lay on a braai and party featuring live music from ‘Boogie Band’ as well as two cabaret shows featuring club members.
The fire, salads and rolls will be supplied by the club. Just take your own meat and join in the fun. It is open to all bowlers and members and will get underway at 1pm, giving those who are playing away sufficient time to return to the club for the festivities. Music of the 60s and beyond will feature hits from the Beatles, Bee Gees, Hermin’s Hermits, The Animals and Rolling Stones. Be sure not to miss this.
Of the five sides entered in the league, Wanderers has at least three potential winners in their respective divisions, and hopefully, there will be something to celebrate in those quarters as well.
Rainy weather last Saturday put paid to scheduled club competitions, but some matches have been carded for Thursday afternoon. Check the board to see if you are or could be involved. Time is running out to get outstanding comps played before the end of year.
Last Sunday was the postponed playing of monthly breakfast trips which attracted 18 teams. Dennis Gericke, Joe McNamara and John Yunnie pulled off the first session with a plus 12 and with a modest plus seven, Eric and Anne Smit with Mervin Mitchley did enough to win the meat for the second session. The sportsman’s prize went to Gerrie and Ron Jackson and Eleanor on 0-several.
Lofty Cawthorne, Archie Fisher and Aroo Moodley had a storming first session with + 20 under the belt and looked like tournament favourites to win the overall, but only just squeaked in by a single point in the second session against Arnie Harper’s team. This was nevertheless enough to earn them the second spot with 4+21. Overall winners on the day were the trio of Jumbo Nel, Dave Swanson and William Richardson who came in with 4+25 to steal the show. Eric and Anne Smit had a dose of double luck, taking both the main and lesser prizes in the board draw while Derek Stevens won the raffle for the pork roast. Drawn prizes went the way of skips Arnie Harper and Bob Hayward, seconds Rina Harper and Ron Jackson and leads Neville Horner and Cynthia Addinall.
Next month, this event will again have to be cancelled as it clashes with the playing of the PNB fours. Hopefully, the Woodpark skins will go ahead on the third Sunday as scheduled on 20 October. Add your team to the list which is on the board for this event.
Last Friday was a lucky one for Patrick Ellis who won the R900 snowball as he was present when his number 114 was drawn. Other lucky winners in the monthly R50 bowls draw were Rob Philogene (R750), Billy Lottering (R500) and Raymond Smolas (R250). Billy Lottering was also the winner of the pork ribs. Troy Simpkins won the lamb pack, Eric Redman the chicken packs, Mark Jackson the sirloin steaks and Margaret ‘Honey’ Eitner the Chicken. Footnote: This is probably the last time ‘Honey’ will be referred to in print as Eitner as the day after this, 28 September, she and Eric Kitchenbrand tied the knot in a delightful wedding ceremony at the club. Well done Mr and Mrs Eric and Margaret Kitchenbrand – may you have many happy years of wedded bliss ahead.
Snippet: (Law 33.5.2-3 and 33.6): “If a jack at rest on the rink is displaced by a non toucher rebounding from the bank, an opponent or the marker should put it back to its former position”. Similarly “If a jack at rest in the ditch is displaced by a non toucher entering the ditch, an opponent or the marker should put it back to its former position”. And “If a jack at rest on the rink is in danger of being moved by a bowl from a neighboring rink, ANY player at the head or the marker should STOP the bowl”. (Do not “lift” the jack): “If that bowl was in its original course and was delivered on a bias that would have taken it back into its own rink, it should be replayed”.
These are the new changes regarding these contingencies and do not provide for “dead ends” or “skips having to decide previous positions” etc as before.
