Rain halts club comps at Wanderers BC

First past the post, and on the perch for November, was the foursome of Dennis Gericke, Chris Klopper, Terry Brown and Gordon Chislett with an 18+23.

WANDERERS Bowling Club experienced rainfal for most of last Thursday and Friday, and the greens were left too soggy for scheduled club competitions to be played.

However, as it eased on Saturday, the Woodpark skins went ahead as planned on Sunday, 20 October when the diligent green keeper arranged to cut the greens early in preparation for the event. Thanks Lionel.

Twelve teams competed and thanks to the generosity of sponsors, every player received a prize. First past the post and on the perch for November was the foursome of Dennis Gericke, Chris Klopper, Terry Brown and Gordon Chislett with an 18+23.

In second place with an 18+10 was the team of Anthony and Robbie Carr, Bob Hayward and Thomas Simpkins.

Third place winners, taking the Spur R100 meal vouchers, were Stella Park visitors Kim and Lorinne Hawkins, Debbie Nortje and Nicola Bauristhene and fourth placed Clive Symons, Mike Freeman, Jo-Anne Jordaan and Jackie Freeman settled for the R50 Wimpy vouchers. Session winners with an 8+12 and an 8+9 respectively were Archie Fisher, Ken Koch, Lorraine Du Preez and Aroo Mudlay (the first) and Eric Smit, Eric and Margaret ‘Honey’ Kitchenbrand and Anne Smit (the second).

The sportsman’s prize went the way of Phillip Pieterse, Chantal Hearnshaw, Val McCaffrey and Denis Hearnshaw with a 4-19. The remaining teams, skipped by Keith Wild, Arnie Harper, Richard Hendicott, Bill Hewer and Ron Jackson each won R40 John Dory meal discount vouchers to be used at the Bluff outlet. In two board draws, Anthony Carr won R40 and Andy Cloete R20 with the first draw, and in the second draw, the threesome of Jeff Bolt, Eric Smit and Rob Atkinson won both prizes in a clean sweep.

In the two raffles, Lorinne Hawkins won the meal voucher and Shawn McAlister won the pork roast. Four lucky draw prizes were also made and a good time was had by all.

Earlier in the week, Lyn Wild’s pairs played out to a field of 26 entries. Chris Klopper and Ken Koch came up trumps in the board draws with Dave Rowe and Maria Cavanagh getting the lesser pickings. Eric Kitchenbrand and Derek Stevens won the meat raffles, and Derek Stevens also won the lotto, paying out R345. Winners on the day were Terry Brown and Derek Stevens (again) with a 4+22. In second place with a 4+19 were Ron Jackson and Lofty Cawthorne.

Dave White and Gladys Myburgh picked up the first session with a 2+14 and Raj and Russell Rangiah claimed the second session with a 2+12. Colin Howes and Sharon De Kok claimed the sportsman’s prize with a 0-28.

On or before next Saturday, 26 October, the following games of the men’s drawn fours are to be played: Steve Van Rooyen, Peter Tayfield, Jeff Bolt and Eric Redman are to play Dennis Gericke, Mike Freeman, Mike Flack and Shawn McAlister; Chris Pozyn, Archie Fisher, Derek Stevens and Rob Spiller are to meet Ron Jackson, Wayne, Joe McNamara and Fred De Vry; and Lofty Cawthorne, Greg McGuinness, Dave Matthews and Les Prinsloo are to face Arnie Harper, Bob Hayward, Errol Pienaar and Johan Nel for a place in the finals.

Last Friday, Peter ‘Foxy’ Fox was present when his number was drawn and so he collected the R700 snowball. Next week it reverts back to R500.

Various meat winners were: Mutton pack and wors, Mark Jackson; chicken pack, Troy Simpkins; rump steak, Des Demmer; pork ribs, Rob Philogene; chicken, Russell Knott.

On Friday, 25 October, Jeff ‘Sausage’ will entertain with his disco sounds.

Snippet: Level three coaches always urge their pupils to “see the line, walk the line and then play the line”. This catchy saying emphasises the importance of correct stance or ‘address’ on the mat once the line has been chosen and decided. Standing narrow will invariably result in a narrow bowl, and vice versa, so take care in positioning yourself precisely ‘along the line’.
