Saints 1sts batsmen outshine Quins 3rd cricketers

Opening batsman, Brett Williams top scored with 31 runs including one six and four fours.

UMBILO Harlequins’ third side took on Silver Saints first team in a 30-over-a-side, division one encounter at Harlequins 2 on Sunday afternoon, 12 January.

The outfield was rather shabby, but dry. The was wicket superlatively conductive to run scoring with favourable clear skies, but uncomfortably hot and humid conditions most typical of January.

Quins chose the historically favoured option of batting first in this afternoon match while conditions were good and piled on 145 runs for nine wickets. Opening batsman, Brett Williams top scored with 31 runs including one six and four fours. Number three knocker Warren Torguis played a delightful innings comprising a quarter century which included two sixes.

Captain Shane Manicom accrued 22 runs at number seven, which included four boundaries. Quins were looking steady in this match until about the 12th over, when Silver Saints were 35 runs for three wickets, but a steadfast partnership of over a hundred runs in which the opposition’s number four and five batsmen proved to be dogged and resolute in their endeavours, caused some degree of frustration to the Quins attack and fielders alike. This saw Silver Saints through to a deserved victory in fading luminance on the Harlequins oval.

All seven of Quins’ cricket teams will be engaged in league matches during the weekend of 18 and 19 January, with the first, second, third, sixth and U11 sides having home matches. The fifth team travels to Phoenix Sidmore and the fourth side has a match at Cato Manor 2.

U11s will be coached at the Harlequins nets at 5.30pm on Thursday and seniors will practise on Wednesday and Friday from 4.30 pm. Call Ernest on 031-467-3270 for further club information.
