Mighty Mitch mauls reckless Robbie
In club competitions, Dennis Gericke, Bob Hayward and Eric Redman beat Graham Funnell, Errol Pienaar and Eric Miller 18-10 in the men’s trips.

IN what was essentially a grudge match in Friday’s twilight trips between hot favourites (“reckless”) Robbie Carr with Rina and Arnie Harper, the vastly less experienced team of Russell Shepherd, Mike Flack and “mighty” Mitch Mitchley, (a novice), beat them 12-6 over the 10 ends played, bringing great satisfaction to Mitch who had had much pre-match verbal remonstration with Robbie.
Aside from that, Wednesday’s Lyn Wild’s pairs competition attracted 20 teams and was played in two sessions of 10 ends. Wentworth and Bluff visitors respectfully won each of the sessions: Tom and Maria Cavanagh the first with a plus nine, and Dudley Dorrofield and June Forster the second with a plus 17. It was the local team of Lofty Cawthorne and Derek Stevens who stole the show, however, to win overall first prize with a 4+18.
Clive Symons (R40) and Derek Stevens (R20) were the board draw winners, and Margaret Kitchenbrand won the meat raffle. Sharon De Kok won R140 on the lotto, choosing the right combination of numbers 5-8-9.
In club competitions, Dennis Gericke, Bob Hayward and Eric Redman beat Graham Funnell, Errol Pienaar and Eric Miller 18-10 in the men’s trips, Andy and Brenda Andraschko beat Lofty Cawthorne and Kathy Faifer (replacing Gladys Myburgh who has left the area) 21-18 in the nominated mixed pairs. Then in the drawn mixed pairs, Mike Freeman and Lorraine Du Preez thumped Andy Andraschko and Val McCaffrey 29-2 with several ends to spare.
Eric Kitchenbrand and Shaun McAlister played two matches in the men’s nominated pairs, the second one a final.
They won both beating Russell Shepherd and Mitch Mitchley 20-18 and Lofty Cawthorne and Ken Koch 23-16 in the final. The women’s competition secretary says that, owing to the intense heat at this time of the year, all women’s competitions will start later than normal with immediate effect until further notice but until at least the end of March. The new start time will be 2.30pm.
Sunday’s Rawdon’s open skins as it will now be called, attracted a small field of only 10 teams, but was played with much enthusiasm. Bill Hewer, Andy Cloete, Arthur Carlisle and Claude Newman from Woodlands picked up the first session with a 9 + 8; Lofty Cawthorne, Archie Fisher Steve and Ken Koch won the second on 10+8. The Carr’s side comprising Anthony, Robbie and Taryn with Tommy Simpkins were the overall winners with 18+13, getting nine points per session. In second place was the team of Eric and Anne Smit, Eric and Margaret Kitchenbrand picking up Spur vouchers with the Wimpy vouchers going to fourth placed team of Dennis Gericke, Chris Klopper, Alan Bruce and Gordon Chislett. Arnie Harper’s team comprising himself with Mike Flack, Lorraine Du Preez and Gwen Tait were the sportsman’s team of the day, with a meagre one point and minus 16 shots.
Every other competing team received John Dory meal discount vouchers. Two board draws were sold, the winners being Tanya Carr and Val McCaffrey (R40 each), Thomas Simpkins and Lorraine Du Preez picking up R20 each. Lorraine also won the R250 meat voucher in a separate draw. Troy Simpkins won the meat raffle. The organisers express their thanks for the ongoing sponsorships from local businesses.
Playing in the quarter-finals of the district Pro 10 two bowl pairs competition, Steve Van Rooyen and Bob Hayward lost by the narrowest margin (49-51) to Charlie Sullivan and John Barry who went on to contest the finals, finishing in second place to Clinton Roberts and John Connellan. Kerry Gilder and Gary Watson finished third, and Trevor Phillips and Bronwyn Webber fourth.
The meat draw winners were: Lamb pack Mark Jackson, chicken pack Norman Bester, rump steak Mitch Mitchley, pork ribs, Adina Swanepoel, chicken Margaret Kitchenbrand.
Last Friday’s snowball draw of R1,400 was not won as Marietjie Venter was not present.

Snippet: Take care with that ‘anchor foot’ when standing on the mat prior to delivery. One whole foot has to be fully on the mat so as to not be deemed a ‘foot fault’. No part of it may hang over, even slightly, any part of the mat.
