Lofty and Ron win roadrunners pairs

Snowball of R500 not won as Ronnie Jackson was not present.

LOFTY Cawthorne and roadrunner himself, Ron Jackson were overall winners of the roadrunners pairs held last Wednesday at Wanderers Bowling Club.

Their score of 10+28 was eight shots better than second placed finishers, Terry Brown and Derek Stevens who were on 10+20.

Skins were won by Jumbo Nel and Herbie Roux – the first with +9, George Harris and Ken Thomas – the second with +8 and Eric Kitchenbrand and Johan Nel – the third with +11. Errol Pienaar and Colin Nicholas got the sportsman’s prize with 0-28, but Errol made up by winning the major share of the 60/40 board spoils while Lofty Cawthorne settled for the minor share. Dianne Swan won the meat, and two lucky punters shared the lotto winnings scooping R140 each. Well done George Harris and Val McCaffrey.

Sunday’s Rawson’s Property skins tournament was well attended. Val McCaffrey was once again in the money winning the main prize on the 60/40 board. Terry Brown took the lesser amount. Honey Kitchenbrand won the salt beef and Andy Cloete the whisky. Andy Cloete’s side of himself, brother Tom, Dave McCann and Claude Newman also won the sportsman’s prize – a not too shabby chunk of meat for scoring only four points minus nine shots. Overall winners on the day and “on the perch” for the next outing were the team of Eric Smit and Eric Kitchenbrand and their spouses Honey and Anne with 17+14. Arnie Harper, Mike Flack, Lorraine du Preez and Neville Horner were second with 15+9. Clive Symons, Mike Freeman, Joe McNamara and Jackie Freeman were third with 14+9. First session went the way of Chris Klopper, Greg McGuinness, Terry Brown and Gordon Chislett with 10+17 and second session went to Mary Rust and Chantal Hearnshaw with 10+8. The next five finishing teams all were awarded with meal discount vouchers.

At prizegiving, it was discussed whether or not to shorten this tournament to two ten end sessions. It was decided that this tournament would stay in the format of 12 ends per session, but as this takes a little longer to play than two ten end sessions and because there are always quite a few players wanting to play in the Nomads which clashes with this date, in future there would be an earlier start. Due notice will be given, but in future all games to commence at 8.30am, not 9am.

A club competition was played in the afternoon. Joan Bruce, Eric Swanson and Shaun McAlister triumphed by 25-10 over Mary Rust, Bill Addinall and Johan Nel in the 2013 mixed drawn trips.

On Saturday afternoon, the ‘A’ side accommodated Northlands ‘A’ by agreeing to play their second round league match against them a week early and away. Lofty’s side managed a good 12 shot win which brought the club a bonus point. Arnie’s side peeled their match and Richard and co went down by seven shots. Overall result: Wanderers 4, Northlands 3.

Snippet: Measuring for shots is an art and acquired skill and is so often seen being done all wrong. I shan’t go into the details of measuring here. Suffice to say that it should be conducted by someone who at least has been trained in the correct methods, and in a fours match, that duty rests on the shoulders of the third. The third may, however, delegate the responsibility to another member of the team with the approval of the opponent. In pairs matches, the onus is on the lead to measure, and quite often the lead is a newish bowler or even a novice. His skip should ensure that he thus acquires the skills before participating, or be willing to leave all the measuring to his opponent who hopefully will be competent.
