‘There is a bright future for this team,’ insists Lions rookie Darrien Landsberg

The Lions have lost four matches in a row and are next up against the Dragons in the Challenge Cup on Sunday.

Rising Lions utility forward Darrien Landsberg has issued a warning to teams that underestimate the Lions, ahead of their Challenge Cup clash against the Dragons in Newport on Sunday afternoon.

Lansberg made his debut for the team earlier this season and the utility forward has been slowly establishing himself as a key member of the forward pack.

He believes that despite their current poor run of form, which has seen them lose their last four games across the United Rugby Championship and Challenge Cup competitions, that they will eventually come right and become a force to be reckoned with.

“For everyone that feels like they are sleeping on the Lions or that we are not where we should be, we are getting there and once we get there, we are definitely going to be an outfit to watch out for,” said Lansberg.

“We understand that we are still building. But at the same time it’s each and every individual understanding their role, understanding what they need to do, and what it is they need to bring to this team in order for us to grow together.

“I do think as this Lions team grows, these (current) experiences are going to grow us as a team. As long as we stay together, stay tight-knitted, I feel like there is really a bright future for this team. I am very confident in that fact and that we are growing in the right direction.”

Preferred position

Landsberg has played in the loose trio and also at lock so far, and although he admits that his preferred position is in the second row, he is just happy to contribute in whatever position is needed of him.

“To be honest with you it is anything to serve the team at this point. The best opportunity to play and be on the field is the number one priority for me. I would love to play five, but wherever the team needs me I am happy to put my hand up and serve,” said Landsberg.

The Dragons Challenge Cup game is an important one for the Lions as they need two points from it to secure their place in the next round of the competition, while a win would give them a great chance of securing a favourable draw and a home playoff.

The Lions have received a boost ahead of the match after it was confirmed that their side has a clean bill of health, with flyhalf Jordan Hendrikse, who missed the Stade Francais game, available for selection.
