Benni likens MTN8 win to Champions League triumph

The Cape Town City mentor has described winning the MTN8 trophy as a coach as one of his biggest achievements.

Benni McCarthy won his first trophy as a coach when his side beat SuperSport United on penalties on Saturday night at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

He is currently the only South African player to have won the Uefa Champions League.

“I think this one has its own merit, because as a player I was part of that group I never did it on my own,” McCarthy tells the SABC.

“So I think this one has to be almost right up there with the Champions league, and scoring in the World Cup, and scoring four goals in the Africa Cup of Nations, and being the prize asset of a tournament, this one has to be up there.

“I am not the one that needs to know what to do on the pitch, if I put the ball in the net my team is fine, but I am having to coach how to maintain the opposition at bay, and also to try and get past them and score.”
