Chiefs hoping to bring back ‘glory days’ by playing home games away from FNB

When Chiefs won trophies between 2011 and 2015, some of their home games were played at Peter Mokaba.

Kaizer Chiefs will be looking to bring back the ‘Glory Days’ after signing a deal with the Polokwane municipality to play some of their home games at the new Peter Mokaba Stadium in Limpopo.

Chiefs made the announcement on Thursday, with the team’s marketing and commercial director Jessica Motaung saying that they know that the people of Polokwane will be filling the stadiums in the three home games the club has scheduled to play in the northern part of the country this season.

The Glamour Boys have some special memories of playing at Peter Mokaba between 2011 and 2015, with the club winning four trophies during that time.

“We are delighted to be back in the province of Limpopo and the city of Polokwane in particular, where we enjoy great support. We are looking forward to three exciting games with a full stadium because we know that the people of Limpopo will come out in numbers because they love Amakhosi,” said the Chiefs Marketing and Commercial Director on the club’s website.

“Their support proved key in the past when we lifted the league trophy with the New Peter Mokaba as our home venue. We hope that history will be repeated when we play at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium again. We believe in long-term agreements; and being in Polokwane for three years means we will be working with the municipality to achieve our goals or promoting sport, particularly football in the city.”

Meanwhile, Polokwane city manager Thuso Nemugumoni added that having the Soweto giants come to play in Limpopo will be beneficial for the province’s tourism and economy.

“Having Kaizer Chiefs to Polokwane is a strategic move as we know the economic impact it will have on the city. We know the games will boost tourism with many people traveling to Polokwane. We also know that jobs will be created, with small businesses standing to benefit from this,” said Nemugumoni.

The Naturena Glamour boys will host Royal AM on 29 January, Lamontville Golden Arrows on 19 February and Swallows FC on 2 May 2023 – all at Peter Mokaba.
