Chiefs keeper Petersen confident of win at Sekhukhune

“We have been on a good run and it is important for us to go into this game and collect maximum points because we are fighting for the second spot,” says the keeper.

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has described their DStv Premiership match against Sekhukhune United as an important game.

Petersen says it is a game Chiefs need to win to keep their Caf Champions League participation next season alive.

Chiefs have, through their coach Arthur Zwane, confessed their wish to return to the continent’s biggest club championship next season.

And for that to happen, Chiefs will have to finish second to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Premiership.

A third place finish, or winning the Nedbank Cup where they are semifinalists, will see Chiefs play the other Caf competition, the Confederation Cup.

Chiefs are currently fourth in the standings, five points behind second placed Orlando Pirates, and three behind SuperSport United who are a place above them.

“It’s very important for us to continue where we left off before the cup game,” Petersen told the club’s website.

“We have been on a good run and it is important for us to go into this game and collect maximum points because we are fighting for the second spot.”

Chiefs have won four and drawn one in their last five league games. They also beat Royal AM in the Nedbank Cup last weekend.

Petersen aware of Babina Noko danger

Petersen is however mindful of Sekhukhune’s threat in this game at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo.

“Sekhukhune are a difficult team to play against,” admitted Petersen. “We know what they are capable of from the first (round) game.

“And they come into the game off a good cup run. We are expecting a tough game, but I have confidence in the boys, and I know we are going to go out and give our best.”

The 28-year-old Petersen also said the preparations had been what he wanted ahead of the game.

“The week has gone well. The guys are looking sharp and we are looking forward to this game.

“For me, it’s important to train the way I want to play, and the good performances have come from going into games being ready and prepared,” added Petersen.

A win for Chiefs will see them equal on points with SuperSport on 44, but unless it’s a win with 12 goals or more, Matsatsantsa will still be above them on goal difference.

Sekhukhune are meanwhile also looking to break into the top eight and a good win, with three or more goals, could see them jump to fifth place.
