Kaizer Chiefs v Orlando Pirates – the last five DStv Premiership derbies

Can Pirates break Chiefs' winning streak on Saturday?

Kaizer Chiefs take on Orlando Pirates on Saturday in the first DStv Premiership Soweto derby of the season.

Despite going almost nine years without a trophy, Amakhosi have had the edge over the Buccaneers in this fixture in recent times.

Here we take a look back at the last five Premiership clashes between Soweto’s great rivals.

21 March 2021 – Kaizer Chiefs 1 Orlando Pirates 0

The 100th ever league Soweto derby saw Kaizer Chiefs get revenge for a 2-1 loss to Pirates just a couple of months earlier. Striker Samir Nurkovic was the hero, scoring a brilliant overhead kick in the 54th minute, his first ever goal in a Soweto derby.

The season was a poor one overall for Chiefs as they finished 8th on the standings, while Pirates ended up third, but some 17 points behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

Keagan Dolly had a stellar first Soweto derby for Kaizer Chiefs, grabbing a brace as Stuart Baxter’s Amakhosi beat the Buccaneers 2-1 at FNB Stadium, in a game played behind closed doors because of the Covid-19 virus.

After a goalless first half, Dolly struck after latching onto a fine pass from Khama Billiat, and while Linda Mntambo levelled for Pirates, Chiefs won the game in stoppage time, after Billiat was hauled down in the penalty area, and Dolly stepped up to fire in the spot kick.

The second round of the derby in the 2021/22 season was also played in an empty stadium and produced the same result, Erick Mathoho’s late strike enough to give Chiefs a 2-1 win, and a DStv Premiership double over the Buccaneers in an otherwise disappointing season.

Reeve Frosler put Chiefs in front in the first half, only for Kwame Peprah to cancel that out with a rare Pirates goal after the break. Chiefs ended the season in fifth place, 18 points behind Sundowns, while Pirates finished one place and three points behind Chiefs.

29 Oct, 2022 – Orlando Pirates 0 Kaizer Chiefs 1

Yusuf Maart lit up this Soweto derby with one of the best goals ever scored in a Chiefs-Pirates encounter. In the 74th minute, Maart picked up the ball and from inside his own half sent a spectacular lob over Siyabonga Mpontshane in the Pirates goal.

Maart’s strike eventually won Dstv Premiership Goal of the Season, and was even recognised by Fifa in the build up to the Puskas Award nominations.

25 February, 2023 – Kaizer Chiefs 1 Orlando Pirates 0

Chiefs completed a fifth successive DStv Premiership win over Pirates, but they left it late as Olisah Ndah’s last minute own goal settled a game that also saw Innocent Maela sent off for the Buccaneers. Maela was shown a straight red card for bringing down Christian Saile a he bore down on the Pirates goal in the 60th minute.

And Chiefs finally capitalised as Ndah put through his own net. It was Pirates who had the season’s last laugh, however, beating Chiefs in the semifinals en route to lifting the Nedbank Cup, which they added to the MTN8 title won earlier in the campaign.
