Mamelodi Sundowns and Royal AM are said to have joined the race for Stellenbosch FC’s Junior Mendieta, who is atop the Kaizer Chiefs wish list.

The Argentinian star has been a consistent performer for Steve Barker’s side and it is no wonder he has attracted interest from elsewhere.

Stellies are said to have resigned themselves to losing their star at the end of the current term having fended off suitors for a while.

Chiefs are said to have made advances for Mendieta and Sibongiseni Mthethwa earlier this season but they were brushed aside.

Mgosi Squad reported at the time that Stellies were unprepared to part with the duo because they are important in their set-up. But now the situation has changed and Stellies understand they can no longer hold on to their prized players with the big guns knocking, according to a source.

“Chiefs will have stiff competition from Sundowns and Royal AM, who are known for their bottomless wallets. Sundowns have also been asking about Mendieta.”

Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United are also said to be interested in Mendieta, who will turn 30 in June.
