Mthethwa brings new possibilities for Chiefs, says Ntseki

'Bringing him in was us saying, ‘now is the time for us to take the game to them’. And I think he did well in his first game,' said the Chiefs head coach.

Molefi Ntseki is excited about the fresh possibilities that new Kaizer Chiefs signing Sibongiseni Mthethwa brings to the team.

The 28-year-old Mthethwa made a last-minute move from Stellenbosch FC to Chiefs just a day before the transfer window closed last Friday.

In his debut for Chiefs, affectionately known as “Ox” in local football circles, Mthethwa came off the bench during their 2-1 DStv Premiership victory over Sekhukhune United.

He entered the game in the 64th minute, a crucial moment as Chiefs had just equalised after conceding an early goal at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Wednesday evening.

Mthethwa took on the role of defensive midfielder, which allowed Yusuf Maart to push up and become more involved in the attack.

Many had anticipated that Mthethwa would replace Maart and that Edson Castillo would have the freedom to move forward.

However, Ntseki clarified that the decision was primarily to give Castillo some well-deserved rest.

The Venezuelan had been a mainstay in the Chiefs’ lineup, featuring in every game since his arrival in July.

Ntseki’s strategic shift highlights his intent to utilise Mthethwa’s skills to bolster the midfield and adapt the team’s playstyle.

Ntseki replaced Castillo with Mthethwa

It’s a promising sign for Chiefs fans, as they look forward to seeing how Mthethwa’s presence can elevate the team’s performance in the upcoming matches.

“I think if you look at the energy levels… It (change) was key, but also it’s not only being tired from the physical side.

“The decision making was a bit of a challenge for us as well today,” Ntseki said after the game.

“When you look at Castillo, it’s only normal after he put in a big shift on Saturday and with us having Mthethwa on the bench it was about managing the situation.

“Bringing him in was us saying, ‘now is the time for us to take the game to them’. And I think he did well in his first game.

“In the few minutes he played, he showed quality. Everyone around him responded positively.”

With Mthethwa giving an impressive shift in the few minutes he played, it will be interesting to see if Ntseki starts him in his next match.
