Orlando Pirates’ season in numbers

Orlando Pirates have compiled their Absa Premiership 2018/2019 season in numbers, which, despite the disappointment of not lifting the trophy, shows some positives.

The Buccaneers’ last game of the season ended with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Polokwane City at the Orlando Stadium last Saturday, which saw them finish the season in second place.

They missed out on lifting the league trophy by two points after collecting 56 points, while first-placed Mamelodi Sundowns finished with 58.

In looking at their campaign in numbers, the list has the likes of youngster Augustine Mahlonoko, who made a second-half appearance in the opening league game of the season against Highlands park at the age of 17-years.

Here is how they put it together:

2 – the number of points second-placed Orlando Pirates finished behind league winners Sundowns. Last season, the gap was five points.

3 – Red cards received by the club this season. Thamsanqa Gabuza, Marshall Munetsi and Mthokozisi Dube.

9 – The most number of assists by an individual player; and that record belongs to Zambian international Augustine Mulenga.

15 – Goals scored by Thembinkosi Lorch this season; making him the top goal scorer in all competitions for the 2018/19 season.

17 – The youngest player to feature in Pirates colours this season and that was Augustine Mahlonoko – the product of development who came on in the opening league match of the season against Highlands Park.

24 – The number of goals conceded by Pirates in the league this season, making them the best defence alongside Mamelodi Sundowns, who also conceded only 24 goals.

72 – Total number of yellow cards collected this season. The players who collected the most yellow cards were Ben Motshwari and Vincent Pule, both with a total of 7 yellow cards each.

3,885 – the total number of minutes played by defender Happy Jele. The 32-year-old captain played an impressive 42 matches out of the 44 played this season.
