Nomvethe backs Lorch for top PSL award

Veteran forward Siyabonga Nomvethe has thrown his weight behind Orlando Pirates attacker Thembinkosi Lorch to walk away with the coveted Footballer of the Season award.

The Buccaneers’ midfield maestro has also been nominated for the Players’ Player, Midfielder of the Season and Telkom Knockout Player of the Tournament.

“I choose Thembinkosi Lorch because he did very well this season. He scored goals and he deserves to win it. Lorch deserves it because he performed well and he was playing week-in week-out. He is always advancing forward and never holds back. I personally love a player who is always attacking,” said Nomvethe.

The former Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs striker said he was disappointed not to see Siyabonga Mbatha among the nominees for the Goalkeeper of the Season, which will be contested by Mamelodi Sundowns’ Denis Onyango, SuperSport United’s Ronwen Williams and Peter Leeuwenburgh of Cape Town City.

“Mbatha did well since we started the season and he deserves to be in the national team but the competition is too high when it comes to the goalkeepers,” Nomvethe said before he commented on his retirement after 25 years.

“It was a good decision after playing for 25 years. It was hard to decide but I had because at 41 years I had to give the young players an opportunity to play. It is good for me end my career before I broke my leg. I am happy that I played until the age of 41 and since I started playing I have achieved many things especially for Bafana Bafana. I went to Europe and won a championship there.”
