Pienaar reveals why he retired from Bafana
Former Bafana Bafana captain Steven Pienaar says incidents that happened behind closed doors and the treatment he received over the years in the national team camp led him to leaving Bafana Bafana.

Pienaar announced that he will no longer play for Bafana Bafana in 2012, having taken over the captain’s armband from Aron Mokoena.
“There was a build-up, over the years, there were a lot of things happening in the camps behind the scenes. For example before Pitso lost his job, I was on holiday and I had rush back to join the team, I told the doctor I had problems with my back and the doctor said I will have someone look at it, so we went to a gym in Rusternburg.

“ I was having treatment and the security guard came to me and said you need to come to me first you’re doing things without permission. But I said we did it the right way I am getting myself ready for the game, we got to Mbabane and there were a lot of things going on,” said Pienaar in an interview with SABC Sport.
“I was not turning back on the country, there were things building up over the years, and I said do I need this, I think I make the right decision.”
