Inmates help keep Metsimaholo clean
An initiative between Metsimaholo Local Municipality and Department of Correctional Services seeks to keep inmates busy through grass cutting in local parks and cemeteries.
SASOLBURG .– A group of inmates from the Sasolburg Correctional Facility took to the streets of Metsimaholo Local Municipality (MLM) in an effort to keep the town clean recently.
Armed with their grass-cutting equipment, they cut high-rising grass in greenbelt areas in Sasolburg, including some of the arterial roads.
The initiative is a strong partnership between the municipality and the Department of Correctional Services for inmates to be responsible for street cleaning, and grass cutting in parks and cemeteries.
Rubbing shoulders with some of the municipality executives, the inmates were joined by Mayor Jeff Zwane, Member of the Mayoral Committee Ruander Meyer, and Director of Social Services Sello Mokoena.
Following the initiative, Zwane appealed to the public not to litter.
“We urge residents of Metsimaholo to always keep Metsimaholo clean. Keeping our surroundings clean will only help in the betterment of society,” he said.
