Evaton community ‘swims’ in sewer
This situation has been like this for the past eight to nine years and nothing has been done.
EVATON. – For over eight years now the community members of Evaton have literally been swimming in excrement, and the authorities have been ignoring their pleas for help.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster community leader, Mninawe Ntuzini said that the problem with the sewer system at a number of households in the old Golden Highway Road in Evaton is that the pipes are too small and cannot accommodate the flow of the sewer. The community members have had to also, at their own cost, dig up the old ‘small’ pipes and put in new bigger pipes, this is said also not to have helped their plight.
Not long ago, said Ntunzini a body of a stillborn child was found amongst the waste, and the relevant authorities were called but nothing was done.
“It is worse when it rains and over the weekends when there are functions such as weddings, funerals, and/or parties,” Ntunzini said.
A resident, whose house is at the corner and seemingly all the flow finally goes to her yard, Xolelwa Goloza said that all they request is help from the municipality.
“We can not live like this as we have old people here suffering from different illnesses and all this makes the situation much worse for them. They need to go to the doctor now and then because of this and we cannot afford it, please help us.”
Another resident, Kenny Mkhonza who has a child living with a disability said, “My child has developed skin problems because of this situation, please help. I have even had to spend thousands of rand putting in new pipes to let the flow go somewhere else. We seriously need help.”
