VEREENIGING – Hoërskool Drie Riviere’s Sachin Govind, is on his way to the University of the Witwatersrand to study medicine after achieving seven distinctions in the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.

His distinctions include English, Afrikaans, mathematics, life orientation, information technology, life sciences, and physical science.

Sachin, who excelled in all his subjects, was surprised by his language distinctions.

“I was speechless when I saw my marks. I was filled with pride knowing that my hard work had paid off,” he said.

Believing in a balanced life, Sachin, a passionate and hardworking student, also ensured he had enough sleep and relaxation during his matric year.

He stopped studying by about 22:00 to 23:00 daily and relaxed by reading, playing games, drawing, and socialising with friends.

His love for drawing anatomical pictures, like the human eye, ties into his medical aspirations.

Among his favourite subjects were mathematics and physics.

Although he studied hard for the NSC exams, he also found time to socialise and have fun.

One of his fondest memories of his matric year is Heritage Day 2024, during which he celebrated his culture by dressing as a Gujarati (a person who is part of the Gujarati ethnic group, which originated in Gujarat in India). “I felt proud of my heritage and who I am,” he shared.

Sachin credits his success to his supportive parents, teachers, and peers who pushed him academically.

He recommends future matriculants use past exam papers and maintain balance in life. “Take care of your basic needs; you can’t pour from an empty cup,” he advised.

Although life threw several challenges at him during his matric year, Sachin says he tried to focus on his studies and block the problems out.

Sachin’s motto is simple: “Believe in yourself, no matter the current circumstances.”
