Flooding in Kuvukiland mitigated through stormwater project

MLM said in response, it immediately dispatched its Roads and Stormwater Teams to assess the extent of the flooding, evaluate damages, and implement measures to support affected residents.

SICELO. – The community of Sicelo Kuvukiland has raised concerns about flooding in the area following heavy rains on January 5. Community leader, Michael Mokoena said he was called by affected residents who required assistance after their shacks were flooded.

“I rushed to the affected area and on my arrival, I found that a lot of water had gotten inside people’s shacks. About 8 shacks were affected. Their belongings were damaged.

Mokoena said knowing that a more permanent solution would be needed, he immediately called the ward councilor in the area and asked him to solicit help from the Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM).

“I’m happy to report that the municipality responded immediately because a truck was dispatched to the area to drain the water. A project to install stormwater drains is currently underway in the area and we hope that it will help mitigate flooding in the area.”

Mokoena said another concern is that Kuvukiland is not the only place that gets flooded during heavy rains. He urged the municipality to conduct inspections at extensions 4 and 5 in Sicelo and find a way forward as the residents living there are also suffering.

MLM said in response, it immediately dispatched its Roads and Stormwater Teams to assess the extent of the flooding, evaluate damages, and implement measures to support affected residents.

“The teams dug trenches and installed 450mm stormwater pipes at the entrances of affected properties and impacted roads. Additionally, they regraded road sections to redirect water flow, creating a slope to ensure proper runoff. This intervention aims to mitigate future flooding risks by diverting rainwater away from properties and reducing the potential for damage during heavy rainfalls.

MLM maintains that it is a caring and compassionate institution that prides itself on delivering excellent service.

“The municipality remains on high alert throughout this rainy season and is committed to responding promptly to incidents as they arise, prioritising the safety and well-being of residents.”
