How to make the most of South Africa’s 2026 public holidays

April and December are the big winners in 2026, with public holidays turning a few leave days into long breaks.

South Africans planning their leave for 2026 may want to start early, as the official public holiday calendar presents several opportunities to turn a few leave days into extended breaks.

The government has confirmed 13 public holidays for 2026, with April and December standing out as the most leave-friendly periods of the year.

April delivers the biggest reward

April is set to be the most attractive month for time off, thanks to the Easter weekend and Freedom Day.

Good Friday falls on April 3, followed by Family Day on Monday, April 6, creating a built-in four-day weekend. Employees who take leave from Tuesday, April 7, to Friday, April 10, can enjoy a 10-day break by using just four leave days.

Later in the month, on Monday, April 27, Freedom Day offers another easy win. Taking leave on Tuesday, April 28, results in another four-day weekend.

Easy wins in March, May, and June

Human Rights Day falls on Saturday, March 21, but taking Friday, March 20, off allows for a four-day weekend.

Workers’ Day on Friday, May 1, already creates a long weekend. Adding leave on Monday, May 4, extends the break to four days.

June also offers solid value. Youth Day on Tuesday, June 16, allows employees to take Monday, June 15, off for a four-day break. Those who can take the full week off from June 15 to June 19 can enjoy nine consecutive days off.

August and September offer neat one-day tricks

National Women’s Day falls on Sunday, August 9, with the public holiday observed on Monday, August 10. Taking leave on Friday, August 7, results in a four-day weekend.

In September, Heritage Day, celebrated on Thursday, September 24, can be paired with a leave day on Friday, September 25, for an extended weekend.

December shutdown favours early planners

December remains a favourite for longer breaks. The Day of Reconciliation on Wednesday, December 16, followed by Christmas Day on Friday, December 25, creates several leave options for early planners.

Taking leave on Thursday and Friday, December 17–18, provides a five-day break, while booking leave from December 21-24 delivers a 10-day holiday stretch through to December 26.

Possible election day holiday

South Africa is expected to hold local government elections in 2026, and voting day could be declared a public holiday. However, the date has not yet been officially announced.

Once confirmed, the additional holiday could further enhance leave opportunities, particularly if it falls midweek or adjacent to an existing public holiday.

Plan early

With several high-value leave opportunities throughout the year, employees are encouraged to plan and submit leave applications early, especially for April and December, which are likely to be in high demand.
