Police investigate death of initiate in Vereeniging
A young man has died and two others fell ill at a Vereeniging initiation school amid rising concerns over initiation safety.

VEREENIGING – Gauteng police are investigating the death of a 19-year-old at an initiation school in Vereeniging.
The young man reportedly collapsed on Sunday and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other initiates were taken to hospital in serious condition after falling ill during the same ceremony.
Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that a formal inquest has been opened into the death.
Authorities are urging the public to allow the investigation to proceed.
This incident comes amid a troubling pattern in the Eastern Cape, where over 20 young men have died since the start of the summer initiation season.
Police and community leaders continue to call for vigilance and safety during these traditional rites.
