Sundelson wins play-off to win Free State Open

Sundelson showed again that he can perform under immense pressure. Dedicates his victory to his late grandpa.

VAALPARK – A thrilling three-way play-off between Judd Sundelson (23), Leonard Swart and Juan Zander Coetzee set the stage for an epic finale of the 2026 Free State Open.

On Sunday, 18 January, on the lush greens and fairways of Heron Banks Golf Club, Sundelson’s dream became a reality when he was crowned the Free State Golf Champion for 2026.

Sundelson (274: 67-67-70-70) finished 10-under-par, tied with Swart (274: 68-71-66-69) and Coetzee (274: 71-63-71-69). The 18th hole became the center of attention as the three-way play-off turned into a two-way showdown that Sundelson ultimately won.

Sundelson, who won the prestigious Order of Merit at St Andrews last year, is no stranger to the winner’s podium, but this victory was especially sentimental as he dedicated it to his late grandfather, who taught him how to play golf.

In other news, Butch Lombard, president of Free State Golf, said farewell to Heron Banks Golf Club and the Free State Open. He will be stepping down as president later this month. According to Robert Lance, Director of Golf at Heron Banks, Lombard’s contributions and commitment to Free State Golf and Heron Banks will never be forgotten.
