Something blue at BMW International Polo Series

Dressing for a blue-and-white party is not as easy as it seems.

In fashion, both colours signify calmness and have the potential to give you a sophisticated and fashion-forward look. But the wrong shade of blue paired with the wrong piece of white clothing can easily make you look like a big blue mess.

Local celebrities attended the BMW International Polo Series last weekend in their best interpretations of the “Chic blue and white” theme.

As usual, some of them managed to look “chic”, while others were, well … just “blue and white.” Musician and television presenter Stoan Seate and his wife, Dolly, decided on a very playful and relaxed look.

Seate was named one of the Peroni Dons of Style (most stylish gentlemen in SA) earlier this year along with Tumisho Masha and Lulo Cafe (Sikhululo Maliwa).

“I love the fact that Stoan didn’t wear a suit,” says fashion stylist Xolani Mbalo. “He took the blue-and-white theme and put his own unique twist to it. He was confident and comfortable and that is always a great look.

“Dolly, on the other hand, looked too simple for someone who was going to the Polo.”

Tumisho Masha and his wife Zozibini missed the mark this time, says Mbalo.

“The theme was not blue, white and brown. Tumisho looked like he came to the Polo after a long day at the office and Zozibini’s skirt was unflattering.

“The touches of brown on both their outfits gave their look a winter feel at a spring event.

“Blue and white are very strong colours and, very often, they make the most impact when they are worn separately.

“A plain white dress and a striking blue shoe can go really well together. Or a flared blue dress with blue shoes.”

Publicist and socialite Zandile Nkonyeni looked radiant in an off-white dress and blue tinted shades. Strictly Come Dancing SA presenter Roxy Burger wore a short, white dress with a stylish cape.

“Roxy and Zandile looked amazing. Both of their looks were striking, fun and fashion forward.”

Television personality Jen Su opted for a blue dress, beige wedge heels and a blue-and-white fascinator. “Jen Su is one of those people who will wear a fascinator to any event. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn’t.

“This time I think it was meant to distract from the boring blue dress and the hideous shoes.

“Wedge heels are not stylish any more and are the easiest way to ruin any outfit. She wouldn’t have looked too bad if she wore pointed heels in the same colour as her dress. The accessories also didn’t help her outfit.”
