Itumeleng Khune in prize money scandal

Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs captain, Itumeleng "Itu" Khune, has found himself in the center of a scandal regarding his prize money from SA Sports Awards.

Months after winning the biggest prize at the SA Sports Awards in November, the soccer star has yet to receive the money and the car he won.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper and Bafana Bafana captain walked away with the prestigious Sports Star of the Year award at the SA Sports Awards at Sun City, in North West, Daily Sun reports.

While he received the keys live on air, he is yet to get his car or the prize money.

Sources close to the situation said Itu is frustrated because he’s not getting any joy from the organisers or the minister’s office.

One source said: “Itu has tried to enquire about what has happened to his prize.

“But no one wants to give him an answer.

“He’s been sent from pillar to post!”

Another source says Itu doesn’t really care about the money and the car.

“But he feels it would be nice if someone could at least take responsibility, because at the end of the day it’s his money and his car.

“It won’t change anything in his life, but people must keep their promises,” said the source.

Another source told Sunday Sun that Itu had been under the impression that the car was bought already and was going to be delivered to him in the week that he won it.

Another highly placed source alleged that none of the winners have been paid or have received their cars.

“We were shocked to learn that the cars haven’t even been bought yet,” the source said.

Sports Minister, Fikile Mbalula’s spokesperson, Paena Galane, said: “This is ridiculous, because there was never any time frame for the payments of the winners and recipients of prizes.

“Anyone expecting his/her prize has been duly informed.

“The delays are because of the fact that the department also relies on other stakeholders to process their contribution towards the project.
