Explore Joburg’s art scene with a hop-on, hop-off tour

It’s said that if more people used public transport, air pollution will be drastically reduced. And considering congestion on the roads and highways, public transport becomes a simpler way to get around Johannesburg.

Now, Gold Reef City and Gautrain have partnered to create a shuttle service from Park Station in the Johannesburg central business district to Gold Reef City in the south of Johannesburg, which is also the main starting point of the Red City Sightseeing bus.

The service opens up a unique route where people can explore galleries and creative spaces from Rosebank to Braamfontein and the Gold Reef City complex.

Gold Reef City marketing manager Feron Somiah says: “In the past, people could visit us by finding their own way to the precinct or catching the Red Bus.“Now, someone staying in Sandton or Rosebank, for example, can catch the Gautrain to Park Station and hop on the shuttle bus to Gold Reef City.”

Alternatively, one can use the shuttle service to Park Station, jump on the Gautrain, make their way to the Keyes Art Mile before getting the Red Bus sightseeing tour back to Gold Reef City. The bus also stops in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

The Kalashnikovv Gallery’s latest exhibition is Chris Smith’s It’s Irrelevant. The gallery is on Juta Street. The gallery often exhibits cutting edge, politically charged and contemporary art.

Wits Art Museum (WAM) remains an important landmark in terms of its permanent exhibition of African art and artifacts. Until March 24, WAM hosts Highlights of the WAM Holdings, which includes 12 000 historical and contemporary artworks.

Last Saturday, the Everard Gallery presented a walkabout with Pippa Skotnes around the David Brown Zoo Exhibition.

Skotnes is the artist’s daughter and the exhibition represents both a continuation of the work and themes that had been at the heart of her practice over many years focusing on the extremes of human experience, from pain and cruelty, beauty and freedom.

The Apartheid Museum has become a landmark in its own right. Next to the biggest Ferris Wheel in the southern hemisphere at Gold Reef City, the museum stands tall in its own right.S The museum’s permanent exhibitions paint an accurate picture of a dark era in South African history, but also provides hope in the way the country’s democracy is growing. Currently, there’s a temporary exhibition on Nelson Mandela and his life and times.

Red City Bus

For the tour around Johannesburg, hop on the Johannesburg Green Tour at the main terminal point in Rosebank and explore the leafy suburbs around Zoo Lake. Stop at all top attractions, including Zoo Lake, the Johannesburg Zoo and the Military Museum, before reaching the Constitution Hill in Braamfontein.

From there, change to the Red City Tour and continue your journey around the inner city visiting the viewing deck on the 50th floor of the Carlton Centre (the tallest building in Africa), Gold Reef City Theme Park, the Apartheid Museum, the SAB World of Beer, the Origins Centre at Wits before returning back to Constitution Hill and ultimately to Rosebank.
