‘Big deal’: Thuso Mbedu to co-write Afro fantasy comic
South African actress Thuso Mbedu had an amazing 2022, and the award winning actress is set to go big for 2023 in new comic tale

Thuso Mbedu couldn’t have asked for a better year as a rising actress in Hollywood and things are only getting better for our star, who is gearing up for another big move in the film industry.
From the success of The Woman King, a true historical telling of the fierce all-women army in the 18th-century kingdom of Dahomey, to the critically acclaimed Amazon Prime series The Underground Railroad, many have been wondering what her next move will be.
Thuso to co-write Afro fantasy comic
The award-winning actress shared on Friday that she had been manifesting a role in the comic and anime world.
“At some point this year I remember sitting in my apartment thinking ‘Working on a comic and working towards an anime is a must-happen for me. In this lifetime. It will be a lot of hard work but it will be worth it’, and then @strangercomics happened.
“Those who know, know that this is a HUUUUUUGE deal for me. Can’t wait to learn, grow and create in this space with @sebastian.a.jones.”
It has been reported that Thuso will co-write a new tale in the publisher’s Tales of Asunda afro-fantasy series.
The afro fantasy series will be headed by Sebastian Jones, the Strange Comics president.

The synopsis will be set in the fantasy world called the Tales of Asunda’s, with the lead character being “Queen” Niobe, who finds herself thrust into an ethical conflict when she encounters a tribal society that selects its new leader in a fight to the death.
Niobe is in a cross between two worlds, fighting generational traditions and customs or facing the idea of keeping herself hidden away from the world of Asunda.

Jones said in a statement that working with Thuso made sense from the moment they met. The movie will be titled, Niobe: She-Tribe.
“When we started brainstorming for the She-Tribe comic, Thuso breathed new life into Niobe and the vulnerable character relationships with such thought and care. Thuso is a rare spirit who speaks of many lives lived, here and before, and I couldn’t be more excited to share with our fans what we’ve got in store for Niobe and Asunda.”
The movie is set for release in the autumn of 2023.
