How to decorate your home with art

A good rule of thumb is to ensure the middle of an artwork is hung at eye level.

If you love the idea of walls adorned with paintings but aren’t sure how to get it right, here are a few ideas on how to decorate with art.

Creative corner kitchen nook

If you’re lucky enough to have a seating area in your kitchen, you probably use it more than a formal dining area, so make the most of it.

You could create a personal gallery wall of artworks and photos to add to the cosy effect of a corner kitchen breakfast nook. If you have children, this is a great place for displaying your children’s artworks too.

Colour in the dining zone

If you have an open plan dining area with the table close to a wall, use a large piece of artwork to create a focal point and designate the zone.

Beauty in the boudoir

You can use art on the wall behind the head of your bed to frame the main feature – the bed – or the artwork could become the main feature.

For a classic look, mount a series of three to five framed or canvas paintings in a line above your bed.

To create a real feature, turn the whole wall into a gallery wall of photos or paintings. Alternatively, go big by hanging a large piece of artwork above your bed.

Hang or lean a large piece of art above a dresser. If you’re leaning it, play with modern asymmetrical arrangements by positioning the artwork to one side and popping a potted plant or a vase of flowers on the other.

If your home office desk faces a wall, create a view by hanging one large piece of art or a collection of artworks, gallery wall style, above the desk.

The right way to hang art

No matter where you hang wall art in your home, make sure it has the maximum impact by hanging it at the right height.

According to Better Home and Gardens, most people hang wall art too high.

A good rule of thumb is to ensure the middle of an artwork is hung at eye level, which is between 152 and 168 cm.

Happy decorating!
