How to wear denim this Spring

Giorgio Armani once said "jeans represent democracy in fashion". And it's true.

Long gone are the days of wearing jeans when you are simply chilling indoors on weekends. Whether it’s to work, for a glamorous event or casually chic, jeans have become a staple in closets, particularly over the last few years.

And with summer around the corner, we can finally kick the long johns and the leggings and kick back in our true blues. So what can you expect in the stores this spring/summer?

Liezel Griessel, Spree senior buyer, says: “Denim has been the trend for autumn/winter 2015, and for spring/summer – anything denim goes.” With the 70s making a big comeback, “high rise flare-leg to A-line button through skirts, culottes and pinafores – the 70’s influence is the biggest trend”.

Believe it or not, the bootleg is back this summer and bigger than ever, she says. “Distressed, relaxed fit boyfriend jeans are also on top of the denim trend list, with white denim, in all leg shapes and in jackets, as another key trend for the season.”

Denim skirts and dresses
Whether long, short, mini or with button detail, the denim skirt makes a huge return this spring.

How to wear it: The denim skirt is versatile and can easily be dressed up or down. For work, pair with a crisp white shirt, wedge sandals and cross-body bag. Alternatively, pair it with a denim shirt of a similar shade and nude heels, ala Rihanna and Eva Mendes. Since the 70s is back in full swing, pair longer denim skirts with a simple t-shirt and your favourite takkies for a casual dressed-down look.

Flared-leg
While you may be holding on tightly to your skinny jeans, make sure you give this 70s inspired trend a try.

How to wear it: Go for darker colours with a well-fitted shirt and heels. Pair with a denim shirt for a modern take or something that can be tucked into the jeans and pair with a belt to create long, lean lines on the body.

Distressed denim
Finally, looking like a pauper is on trend. Ripped, torn and worn out jeans will be on all the racks this season.

How to wear it: Pairing them with a crisp denim shirt with a tank top and the Addidas Superstars will be sure to turn heads. Add a panama hat to finish off the look. Take notes from celebs like Bonang, Kim Kardashian and Rosey Huntington-Whitely and wear your denims to work with a loose-fitting sweater or a white blazer and some heels for something a little more classic. Be sure to pair with a tote bag to complete the look.

Chantelle Da Silva, a fashion editor and stylist, says: “If you’re going with a pair of distressed denims, keep the rest of your look simple, yet chic. “I would team a pair of statement heels and a white vest or crisp white shirt to show off the details in the denim. Finish this look off with red lips and you’re ready to go.”

White denims
Probably the hardest to pull off, but ever so classic, white denims are back again. They are the perfect jeans to create an elegant look without having to whip out your black slacks.

How to wear it: The white denims are perfect to play with and can be teamed with a number of tanks, T-shirts and tops but if you really want to create a standout ensemble think pastels. Says Da Silva: “A sun-kissed glow, white denims and a pastel blouse will be screaming summer. Slip on your favourite wedges and you are ready for sunset cocktails.”

The Pinafore
Whether in the form of dungarees or overalls or in the form of a dress/skirt the pinafore is perfect for letting your inner little girl shine.
How to wear it: There are a plethora of ways to dress up the pinafore without too much effort. Don’t overthink as the pinafore itself is the statement piece.

The Denim Jacket
Finally, a retake on the usual cropped, embellished number.

How to wear it: Forget the usual suspects when it comes to the button-up denim jacket, think along the lines of trench coats, ponchos and patchwork denim. Again, when it comes to the new age denim jacket, think of the jacket being the centrepiece of the room and the rest of the outfit as small players.
