The Lo Down: Healthy, handsome skin

Beauty for the boys? Although a relatively new market in South Africa, experts predict that cosmetics for men will be the next big thing in beauty products.

With more and more men acknowledging the importance of skincare and beauty routines, here are my tips for healthy, handsome skin.

A daily skincare regimen is just as important for men as it is women and should be quick and easy to follow. Even if you’re not keen for hydrating masks or monthly facials, there are three steps that should make up your routine every morning and evening.

Step 1: Cleanse
If you can’t find the time to do anything else – at least wash your face. Clean your face to remove dirt and oil but avoid using your body soap. This can be damaging to your skin.

Step 2: Exfoliate
Use a gentle exfoliator to remove dead skin that can clog pores and lead to breakouts. An exfoliator is also great for softening beard hair making shaving easier.

Step 3: Moisturise
This is an important final step to lock in moisture, soothe dryness, and hydrate the skin. Ensure that your moisturiser has an SPF.

Once you’ve mastered these steps, add in a focus on your eyes and lips. As we age, both start to lose collagen – responsible for firm skin – so a specialised eye cream and lip balm can help protect these areas.
