A night to remember with Her Majesty the Queen

Once again Emnotweni Arena was packed to capacity with 380 women all dressed up to the nines for a good cause. On this special occasion, the ladies wore ball gowns and tiaras and were holding thumbs they’d be drawn to win the coveted prize of being crowned Queen for a day. This was the inaugural fundraising event for Guardian Angels Head Office, based in Rocky Drift. The evening was such a great success, it will no doubt become a feature on our fundraising calendars. In fact, a tentative date, depending on availability, has already been booked for Friday 6 March 2015.

The evening began with a touching DVD that was showed to the guests, created specially to showcase what Guardian Angels means to a selection of elderly people who enjoy the support and companionship of one of the many volunteers who visit each week. The DVD served to remind the guests what a special role Guardian Angels plays in the life of elderly people in Mpumalanga, and also through their branch in Gauteng and Natal.

Manda Gomes, owner of Ramps-to-Runway, spoke to the guests on what it means to have entered and won international beauty pageants (too many to mention). She wowed the crowd wearing her pageant crown and wore one of her many gorgeous pageant ball gowns. Three lucky ladies were selected from a lucky draw to come up on stage and, from the three, Colleen Dreyer was crowned “Her Majesty The Queen”. She looked both stunned and highly amused sitting regally on her throne after receiving her crown from Manda Gomes.

Sam Jagger, of Rise FM, kept the enthusiasm going when it came to auctioning off donated goods and got the ladies to dig deep into their pockets, an amount of R14 000 was raised on the auction alone. Interspersed in the crowd were four Puma rugby players, their manager and Armand Labuschagne, a Mr SA finalist. Some lucky lady walked away with a signed rugby ball and the prospect of dinner with the four Puma players in the near future. Wrapping up a fantastic evening, Tanya Edwards and her dance troupe, from the Rhythm Image Dance Studio, ended with a funky dance routine that took us back to the days of Danny and Sandy in the movie Grease.

Marcel van Doorn expressed her sincere gratitude, on behalf of Guardian Angels, for the community support they’d received and extremely generous donations and sponsorships from a variety of local businesses that made the night possible. Here’s looking forward to another regal and rowdy event next year. For more information on Guardian Angels, email: headoffice@guardianangels.co.za or call Jackie on 082-452-0940.
