‘Adopted’ elderly treated to a morning on the town

A total of 35 elderly from this informal settlement had been "adopted" by White River Guardian Angels to take part in their charity activities. As part of their annual Mother's and Father's Day celebration, the Guardian Angels invited them for breakfast.

MBOMBELA – For some of these elderly from Zwelisha near White River it was their first outing to the big city. They were treated to a delicious warm breakfast by the White River Guardian Angels and The Grove SUPERSPAR on Tuesday and the excitement in the air was tangible.

A total of 35 elderly from this informal settlement had been “adopted” by White River Guardian Angels to take part in their charity activities. As part of their annual Mother’s and Father’s Day celebration, the Guardian Angels decided to show these elders how important they were by treating them to breakfast and dessert at The Grove SUPERSPAR. Along with the breakfast, they each received a surprise gift – a poncho – to help keep them warm this winter.

“People from rural areas appreciate different things to those from the city,” said Guardian Angel Marcel van Doorn. “We decided to give them ponchos as gifts because they might appreciate their warmth this winter.”

To show their appreciation to all the organisations who made the day possible, the elderly sang and danced after their meal. The mood was so contagious that the staff eventually joined in the revelry.

Seven Guardian Angels volunteers accompanied the team to assist with the elderly. They were also spoiled with a meal as payment for their tireless and invaluable work.

“We would like to thank everyone from SUPERSPAR for donating the food and the venue and for making this day possible,” Van Doorn said.
