Good Samaritan donates shoes to needy learners
"I saw kids who are related to me and others staying in my village. They did not have school shoes and it pained me as they reminded me of my past. I had no choice but to do something that will change their lives," Mahlakwana said.
MECKLENBURG – Local resident Mr Culture Mahlakwana from Morapaneng Village says he was saddened to see pupils attend classes barefoot. He then decided to act. Mahlakwana approached several companies that do business with the Twickenham Platinum Mine to help by donating shoes to the nearby schools.
“I saw kids who are related to me and others staying in my village. They did not have school shoes and it pained me as they reminded me of my past. I had no choice but to do something that will change their lives,” Mahlakwana said.
He told the paper that he knocked on several doors to ask for donations. “Some ignored my pleas, but the majority helped. I also took from my own pocket to ensure more shoes were bought.”
On April 15 he and his friends visited Mpetje, Teleki, and Masibudi primary schools to hand over 200 pairs of school shoes to the needy and vulnerable pupils. On the same day Mahlakwana also donated 30 pairs to Tekaneng Secondary School.
The good Samaritan told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that growing up, he saw pupils who lacked confidence because they did not have uniforms and he was planning to donate some in the near future.
