WHITE RIVER – Superbly crafted spirits and fine wine were celebrated at the annual Spring Spirits and Wine Show over the past weekend. Connoisseurs of wine were brought together at Ingwenyama Conference & Sports Resort in White River on Friday and Saturday for a taste of the best.
As there are few wine and no whisky shows, the Lowveld has been classified as “untapped”. Ingwenyama stepped up to the challenge and decided to offer top-class cellars, distilleries and breweries a premium platform to showcase their finest products. It was a huge success.
Lovers of good-quality wine, spirits, and even one or two beers and ciders, were treated to the industry’s lateststyles, vintages and artistic experimentation. New products were showcased and old favourites were tasted and enjoyed all over again. Those interested could order from a wide variety of choices. It is difficult to single out any one product, but a few of them are definitely worth mentioning.
Blaauwklippen, one of the oldest vineyards in South Africa, presented its Before & After Apéritif. This lovely and racy dessert wine offers a sensuous flavour – cinnamon and Christmas spice created the backbone of this sophisticated brandy fortified aperitif. It could be enjoyed neat or on the rocks as a classic before and after dinner drink or used as an ingredient in cocktails and special dishes.
Aaldering Vineyards & Wines surprised with its pinotage blanc – a white pinotage. Zesty pear and pomegranate flavours, with an alluring creaminess, create perfect balance in this limited Blanc de Noir wine. It is really worth trying.
Many Lowvelders who visit Mozambique regularly knows the delicious taste of R&R, a drink that has been enjoyed by Mozambicans for over 150 years. Tipo Tinto rum is the so-called secret ingredient and is now officially available in South Africa. Try it with Sparberry and you will certainly not be disappointed.
Those who find a whole bottle of wine a tad too much should be on the lookout for Rhebokskloof’s brand-new quality wine by the glass. Choose from a top quality Shiraz or Chardonnay packed in a glass-sized pouch. It is very convenient, especially for ladies carrying handbags.
The weekend promises to rock the Lowveld calendar again next year so be sure not to miss out.
