Avid dancers tango the night away at Uplands

It was like a scene from an Argentinian dance hall with the dancers owning the floor.

WHITE RIVER – A number of dance lovers learned a few new steps at the Lowveld Ballroom and Latin Dance Social Club’s recent tango evening. It took place two weeks ago at Uplands Preparatory.

Dance instructor Len Evans and Felicia Lemmer.

The well-attended event had guests bringing their own refreshments and snacks for a casual evening of fun. But there was nothing casual about what happened on the dance floor.

After everyone was taught the basic steps by dance instructor Len Evans, it was full swing into the intensely sultry dance. Before you knew it, it was a scene from an Argentinian dance hall with the dancers owning the floor. All that was missing was the roses held between the teeth.

The tango originated on the streets of 18th century Buenos Aires and Montevideo in Uruguay as the favourite dance of the European immigrants, former slaves, working people and lower classes.

The quick rise in its popularity enabled it to quickly expand out of South America, becoming common place in Europe, North America and the rest of the world. With its rich history, numerous types and styles, and incredible appeal, tango remains one of the most popular dances in the world.

The club has regular dance events. Keep an eye on the newspaper for more information about their next planned event. For any dance lesson queries, contact Evans on 060 755 9318.
