The women in Mbombela Total Shutdown march against gender-based violence (GBV) refused to be addressed by a man on Wednesday at the government complex.

Not only that, they also told those who were wearing political regalia to take them off.

Some women ended up leaving and others watched from a distance.

This march is also known as the #TheTotalShutdown: Intersectional Women’s March Against GBV.

Bathandwa Ngomane, one of the organisers of the local event, said they were all informed of the rules of the day.

“Dress code is black with a touch of red. We all have political parties that we can represent, but today is not about campaigning. Today we are here to march against GBV,”she said.

They started marching from the Grove to the government complex and handed over a memorandum.
