Emergency incidents at two Sandton construction sites
In one incident two men were injured in a structural collapse while in another incident a man drowned after falling into a bathtub filled with water.
Emergency services were called to attend to two separate incidents at construction sites in Sandton on Tuesday.
In the first incident, two people were injured in a structural collapse at a construction site in Sandton.
Emer-G-Med spokesperson Max Cohen said when paramedics arrived on the scene at around 10am, they found that a large scaffolding on the side of the building had collapsed and two workers were “heavily entrapped”.
“Advanced Life Support paramedics worked to stabilise the patients, while fire and rescue officials worked to free them from beneath the scaffolding,” said Cohen.
He said once the patients were freed, they were further stabilised on the scene.
“Once stable, both patients were transported to a specialist trauma hospital under Advanced Life Support care – one by Emer-G-Med and the other by Netcare911,” said Cohen.
Johannesburg emergency management services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi confirmed the two men were taken to Sunninghill Hospital.
“One of the victims sustained critical injuries while the other had minor injuries to moderate injuries,” said Mulaudzi.
He said the cause of the collapse was not yet known.
Cohen also said the events leading up to the collapse were unknown and would be investigated by local authorities.
The Aveng Grinaker-LTA Trencon joint venture confirmed there was a staging collapse at its Stella Road construction site in Sandton, which resulted in the unfortunate injury of two construction workers.
In response to media queries, Aveng Grinaker-LTA Trencon stated, “They [the injured] have been taken to hospital for medical attention and we await news of their well-being.
“Ensuring the highest safety standards at all our operations is integral to the way we conduct our business, and the health and safety of our employees and contractors remains our primary concern.
“Activity at the site has been suspended pending a full investigation into the cause of the accident and we will provide the necessary support to the individuals concerned and their families.”
In a separate incident at around 9am on Tuesday morning, Netcare911 paramedics attended the scene of a construction site after a construction worker fell into a bath filled with water. The paramedics said apartments were being built on the construction site.
A statement from Netcare911 read, “When Netcare911 paramedics arrived on scene they initiated Cardi-Pulmonary Resuscitation. This went on for some time but sadly, there was nothing more that could be done for the man. The man was declared dead on scene by a Netcare911 paramedic. ”
