Update: August 2
The man who stands accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend in the arm with a syringe has not been rearrested since failing to appear for his trial on August 17.
Mr Lismore Basson was to begin facing charges of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, but he was nowhere to be seen.
However, he allegedly made an appearance the next day – when his name was not on the roll – and his trial was postponed to July 25.
Ms Iris da Silva, his accuser, knew nothing about the new court date, as she was awaiting news of his arrest.
A warrant was issued for Basson the day he failed to show for his trial.
Yet, this was apparently cancelled when he arrived the following day.
Da Silva said she was not notified that another court date had been set.
Apparently, the investigating officer also only heard about the new date on the day.
Both attended the trial on June 25, when it was postponed again until August 15.
Da Silva claimed she had received another two messages from someone close to Basson.
On July 19, she received two messages from someone who claimed to be working with Basson at a butchery in Hazyview.
The person allegedly denied sending them.
Both messages Lowvelder saw were sent after 20:00.
The police are aware of these.
Col Leonard Hlathi, spokesman for the police, confirmed that the issue of the messages were being investigated.
“There is nothing the police can do if the court cancels Basson’s arrest warrant,” he continued.
“But he can’t keep doing this. You can’t show up at court when it suits you. The court should be respected. I am sure that if this continues, drastic measures will be taken by the court.”
Update: July 18
The complainant was there, as well as three state witnesses, the prosecutor and the magistrate.
Yet, Mr Lismore Basson failed to show up for his own trial.
