Captains are still on force

Two captains of the SAPS received promotions after they had been found guilty on charges of fraud.

NELSPRUIT – Capt Phindile Raynus Nthali and Capt Nomsa Precious Ndubane are both still active members of the police force, yet both have been found guilty on respective charges of fraudulence.

Lowvelder is in possession of court documents that show that Nthali was convicted of fraud to the value of R7 901,50 in the KaBokweni Magistrate’s Court on November 1 last year. She was sentenced to R15 000 or 18 months’ imprisonment. Ndubane was also convicted of the same incident on October 30, just two days before Nthali. Ndubani was found guilty of embezzlement to the value of R15 803 and was sentenced to R20 000 or 24 months’ imprisonment. A source said that Nthali submitted a false relocation claim to the SAPS, after she had received a promotion from inspector to captain.

The source added that Ndubane also submitted a fake relocation claim after she had recieved the same promotion, allegedly that of branch commander of the detective unit at Masoyi SAPS.

“Apparently the office of the provincial commissioner was aware of this situation, but the fact that Ndubane was heading a detective branch was not regarded as a problem,” he said.

SAPS provincial spokesman, Col Leonard Hlathi claimed he would have to investigate the matter further. Hlathi stated, however, that although they had been found guilty, they would have had to undergo a departmental hearing.

He said this hearing would have decided whether they were deemed fit to stay in service or not. Hlathi said he could not yet confirm whether the two captains had in fact been subjected to departmental hearings.
