Robbers flee with R40k cash

The robbery in the parking lot of a local hospital has raised many questions.

NELSPRUIT – Mystery surrounds an armed robbery that took place in the parking lot of Mediclinic Nelspruit on Friday. According to Mr Vernon Lancaster of Hi-Tech Security, they were alerted that two men driving a blue Mercedes-Benz had robbed the occupants of a white bakkie of R40 000 at gunpoint before driving off in the direction of Barberton.

A client of theirs later phoned to inform them of suspicious activity on the Glenwood road. The man saw a blue Mercedes parked next to a Quantum and two males got into and drove off.

Reaction officer, Mr Ockie Niemand responded and found the abandoned Benz, a pistol and a revolver. He also found that the MP-number plates on the vehicle had been stuck over the original GP-plates.

Ms Robyn Baard of Mediclinic Nelspruit confirmed that the car-guards had responded and alerted the security company as soon as they became aware of the robbery. According to the hospital officials, the victims did not remain at the scene after the robbery.

The SAPS could not confirm that a case of robbery had been opened at the time of going to print.
