Lubbe Pillay battle absorbs Spur Challenge
It was a three way battle between Pillay, Lubbe and Clark on the dusty track around Penryn College...
Arguably the three biggest names to watch for the remainder of the Spur Schools Mountain Biking challenge would be Keegan Clark, Hanru Lubbe and Demarco Pillay. These three riders currently occupy the top rankings in the Sub-Junior category of this exciting series. The event is divided into categories to allow for riders of similiar dexterity to compete on equal footing and in the same age group. The sub-junior category, is considered the “hottest” of the lot and it here that “three musketeers” have made their marks respectively. Currently Pillay leads the group with a total race time of 00:42:43 just a minute ahead of Lubbe on 00:43:46 and three minutes faster than Clark who has some time to make up on 00:46:01.
The young riders pushed each other to the limits of their capabilities this weekend, literally breathing down each other’s neck on the down run over the camel humps near the finish. At one point Pillay and Lubbe nearly touched rubber as they rounded a hairpin to the final stretch. In the end however it was Pillay that pulled through to clinch another round.
The Spur Challenge pits school from accross the province against one another in a series of races on various dirt tracks varrying in difficulty. This weekend’s event was hosted by Penryn College and saw the riders navigate a course consisting of multiple laps around the school premises.
With three rounds done and dusted there remains only a final for the riders to contest. This grand finale will be hosted in September and will give some of the contending schools enough time to adjust strategies and launch an attack to clench top honours or move higher into the rankings.
