Mogale wa Bagale learners give back to the community
we were lucky as most people understood our plan, although some insuled us
GA MANOKE – Learners of Mogale wa Bagale brought smiles to local orphans when the grade 10s donated food parcels and clothes to the local home-based care centre.
This was part of the school’s ubuntu project (value of giving) organised by life-orientation teacher, Ms Alida Sekome.
The pupils were encouraged to choose an orphanage or disability centre and provide it with clothes and foods.
Phumzile Mkhondo, Patience Thotse, Lucia Masalane and Lebogang Kgwedi saw the everyday suffering by Manoke orphans and chose to help them.
The four learners visited businessmen around Tubatse to ask for donations.
“We were lucky as most people understood our plan, although some were negative and insulted us, but we still remained strong.
Our aim was to bring joy into the lives of the orphans and we achieved that,” said Lebogang.
Antoinette Mgiba, caretaker at the centre, thanked the learners for the parcels.
“When I heard Mogale wa Bagale was going to donate goodies to the orphans, I thought it would be from the teachers.
The fact that the learners offered us the parcels, showed there was ubuntu in them. I wish them success in their academics and future endeavours.”
Mgiba currently takes care of 18 orphans; the boys reside at her family’s old house while she shares her home with more than 11 girls.
She told the paper that sometimes they struggle to provide decent meals for the orphans and also urged sponsors to come forward.
The learners thanked their principal, Mr Derick Chilwane and Ms Alida Sekome for supporting them in their endeavour.
