Delays on Plaston road repair

Residents are getting restless about no work on the Plaston road.

PLASTON – Residents are becoming restless about the planned repair of the provincial Plaston Road (D636). It has been a month since the last meeting between mining company Phalaborwa Mining Company (PMC) and community members regarding the work progress.

PMC announced earlier in the year that it would contribute toward the restoration of a section of the road that had suffered considerable damage due to the number of large ore carriers travelling from daily Phalaborwa to Maputo.
Despite celebrating the imminent construction of their “new road” with champagne, residents have yet to see any sign of construction.

The Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport (DPWRT) stated on September 11 that the roadworks would be handed over by the company to the contractor, KPMM, within the following two weeks. Mr Ray Duba of PMC confirmed on Monday that the handover had taken place on September 13 and that the contractor would commence with site establishment before work could start.

A resident and convener of two meetings with the mining company, Ms Vivienne Lawrence said they had been promised that the repair would be finished by December 15 this year. The plan, according to the DPWRT , was to rehabilitate the 7,1km stretch of the D636 between Yaverland and Plaston.
