LYDENBURG – The Mashishing Civic Coalition has intensified its campaign to be part of the solutions of the beleaguered Thaba Chweu Municipality (TCM) while not losing sight of the critical challenges of community development.

According to one leader of the coalition Mr Mxolisi Mkhonto, who is known for his antics and his fierce and fearless approach, the body has developed a strategy to ensure they contribute positively beyond the current leadership.

“The present leadership is dead and buried. They are there as cheque collectors with no vision at all. They know that their time to vacate and leave is now,” he said.

“We have a clear strategy which we call the ‘seven planet strategy’ and are well on track to ensure that we achieve its goals. We are serious about fighting corruption and getting a clean administration. We will not rest until our people are afforded opportunities to benefit from the massive potential for growth and development in our area,” Mxolisi said.

With regards to the ever growing concern about the possibility of Eskom discontinuing its bulk electricity supply to Thaba Chweu, the member of the coalition told the paper that they were sourcing over 5 000 signatures from residents and business to submit to Eskom as a sign of proving to the utility that the people of Thaba Chweu were against the utility’s decision to terminate services.

“We have been to almost all corners in our area urging people to sign our petition against Eskom’s intentions. We have dispatched our comrades to go all out and mobilise society. We want to thank our people and business in particular, for the continuous support that they have given to our campaign to stop Eskom.”

Mkhonto indicated to the paper that the coalition would be meeting with the new acting manager to follow up on issues raised during the protest march of August 16 to find solutions to the challenges besetting the municipality and the people.

“Demand number one is not negotiable. The electricity levy must be scrapped and the free basic service policy must be reinstated immediately. The new manager must not disappoint us on this one,” Mkhonto said.
