NELSPRUIT – There were no queues and no problems on the first day of the last registration weekend for the general elections on May 7. Voter registration stations were relatively quiet but political parties and the IEC are happy with the progress made.
ANC and DA representatives were visible at every station and chatted to voters, pointing them towards IEC officials. Each party kept up a register with voters’ details, noting whether they were registering for the first time or had moved since first registering.
There was a amicable atmosphere at most of the stations, with representatives of the different political interacting easily and even joking with each other at times.
Voters were quickly helped by IEC officials and if they arrived at the wrong station, pointed to the correct one. Officials expect the bulk of voters to visit stations tomorrow morning after church.
Sibusiso Nkosi of the IEC said that the day had gone smoothly in Nelspruit, as well as the rest of Mpumalanga. No problems were reported and they are happy with the amount of voters that had turned up at stations. Statistics will only be available on Monday once all the documentation had been collected and processed.
Voters that have not yet registered are encouraged to visit their nearest voter registration station tomorrow between 08:00 and 17:00. If you aren’t sure whether you are registered, visit the IEC website, www.elections.org.za, or sms your ID number to 32810.
