NELSPRUIT – Six people dies this afternoon when the bakkie they were travelling in collided with an oncoming truck. None of the truck’s three passengers were injured. The incident occurred between Elandshoek and Ngodwana.
Police said that the bakkie, travelling in the direction of Pretoria, allegedly crossed over into the lane of oncoming traffic, right into the truck’s way. The truck driver reportedly attempted to avert a collision and swerved to the right, but so did the bakkie and the two vehicles collided.
Police believe that at least three of the four men who died were on the back of the single-cab Toyota when it crashed. One man’s body was discovered between the truck’s cabin and its trailer as the vehicle lay on its side across the road. The bodies of the two women, one of which was driving, were discovered in the bakkies’s cabin.
Both lanes were closed to traffic following the crash. At 16:50 this afternoon, only one lane had been opened. The identities of the victims will not be made public until their families have been informed.
