Young man ran over on N4

Early this morning a young man was run over by a bakkie on the N4 toll route, about two kilometres from the tollgate towards Nelspruit.

MALALANE – Early this morning a young man was run over by a bakkie on the N4 toll route, about two kilometres from the tollgate towards Nelspruit. The incident occurred opposite Stentor compound, where many people witnessed the victim being dragged to safety by security guards.

The men preferred to remain anonymous, but they did explain the event as they witnessed it. “We were going about our normal activities and manned the gate to these farm areas. We were not looking at the road when it happened, but we did see a young man running past our office, but did not take any notice. Seconds later a truck that makes regular deliveries to this estate, turned onto the dirt road. We heard a loud, banging noise and saw the man lying on the ground. We then rushed to get him out of harm’s way. The driver who accidentally hit the man, stopped a few metres away.”

According to the men, the victim was rushed to hospital soon afterwards. Another witness explained that the man was in the road and the driver of the bakkie could not have seen him coming, as the truck was making a right turn onto the dirt road to the estate.

Corridor Gazette saw how the driver of the bakkie assisted the victim, by using the emergency kit that was in his vehicle.

Capt Thomas Ntuli of Kaapmuiden SAPS said the man was not seriously injured, but was still rushed to hospital. “A charge of reckless and negligent driving has been opened,” Ntuli confirmed.
