Municipality distances itself from selling of water

The Nkomazi Municipality has distanced itself from statements made by the Langeloop Tribal Authority advising residents to purchase water from the municipality at R300.

LANGELOOP – The Nkomazi Municipality has distanced itself from statements made by the Langeloop Tribal Authority advising residents to purchase water from the municipality at R300.

This past Sunday during a meeting at the local tribal offices, residents were informed that if they wanted water tankers to fill their Jojo tanks, they needed to pay R300 for the service at the KaMhlushwa municipal offices.

This came after the community had barricaded the road on January 24 to demand water.

“I have never ever heard that one has to pay for water in this manner. I am old and unemployed, where do they think will I get R300? I don’t even have money to buy a Jojo tank, now I must pay R300 for the water tanker to deliver water to my house,” said Mr Johan Sithole.

Meanwhile Ripinga said the municipality had no knowledge of this and was currently involved in meetings with community members on how best they could ensure the delivery of water to residents.

He said, “As a municipality we do not have any knowledge of this issue. We have not asked people to pay R300 for water tankers to deliver water to their houses. We are planning a community meeting to discuss on which days water tankers can deliver water to households. Langeloop has a water treatment plant, so there is no reason why people should buy water.”
